Painter, Sculptor

Carla Galmés Munar

Carla is a Mallorcan Artist with a background in architecture. Introspection and beauty are her true passion, and have led her to delve into the purity and truth of things.

She finds refuge and inspiration in nature, where she finds truth and calm through observation and the passage of time. Carla looks for her works to transmit her a peace similar to the one she finds in nature, that is why they adopt geometric shapes and textures inspired by it.

The freedom of being and of the mind are the objective of this path, lived through art.

What is your discipline and when did you first encounter it?

My discipline is a mix of painting and sculpture itself. With this style I do wall hanging artworks and also sculptures. I felt the need of painting after finishing my architecture degree, and started with realism painting that expressed my opinions about society.

Although I love painting, what really comes out of me, is artwork with lots of volumes, shapes and textures. I can imagine, influenced by my architecture discipline.

What was your journey to becoming an artist?

As I mentioned, I started painting after finishing my architecture degree. I’ve been exploring different disciplines for years such as visual arts, video art, etc, and been working in parallel in architecture and arts for years, until I decided art is really what I need to do and express to the world.

Who are the key artists whose work inspires your own?

Every time I investigate an artist, it really attracts a great deal of interest on me. The ones that have had a particular impact on me, I would say: Frank Lloyd Wright, John Galliano, Louise Bourgeois, Marina Abramović, Chema Madoz, and lots more…

Tell us about your studio?

My studio is in a small shed behind my house garden. It was built by my grandad who was an inventor and a mechanic, so I use it now as my Atelier. I am so grateful to have it and could use it to do my art.

Who's on your dream dinner party guest list, and what do you serve?

Baskiat, Madonna, Frida Kahlo, Banksy, Rosi de Palma, for example. I would serve some Gildas, good cheese and good wine, probably a pasta and salad after that.

What's a film you watched and book you've read recently that had an impact on you?

‘El libro tibetano de la vida y la muerte’ as the book Succession as the series

If you weren't an artist, what would you have been?

I can imagine I would work as an architect and interior designer, which I already am. I would have liked to be an actress too.

What is your star sign and do you believe you embody it?

Gemini is my star sign and I totally embody it. As I am always exercising my mind and I’m also capable of adapting to different situations. A lot of people say it’s the worst sign, but I really don’t understand why…we are great! Haha
