Caroline Leseur

Caroline Leseur is a self-taught emerging artist who lives and works in Paris, France. After a classical education and studies in modern literature and contemporary history, she began a career in the film industry. However, she has always been sensitive to all forms of artistic expression, and she now works on canvas and paper. Her work is part of the current geometric abstraction and represents a constant quest for balance between form, material and colour. Both light and shape play an essential role in the creation of her compositions. Caroline aspires to ever greater fluidity and minimalism in form and gesture.

What is your discipline and when did you first encounter it?

I am a painter and have been practicing my art professionally for two years. I didn’t have any artistic training but have always been attracted to the world of the arts. My grandfather was also an amateur painter and I remember being fascinated at a very young age by the small improvised studio he had set up in his apartment.

What was your journey to becoming an artist?

I am self-taught as a painter but I have always been immersed in a universe conducive to creation. After studying literature and history, I began to work in the film industry and I still do. In parallel, I was a dancer for almost 15 years and loved to express myself through my body. I live my artistic practice through painting in the same way: the canvas is an infinite space and all kinds of art generating emotion interests me.

Who are the key artists whose work inspires your own?

I am very attracted to the great figures of abstract art such as Joan Mitchell or Shirley Jaffe. Some movements or artistic eras such as Scandinavian design, Bauhaus, Empire style and the 1920s in fashion and Art Deco in jewellery are also sources of inspiration and endless fascination. Besides, I am lucky enough to live close to the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay and the Orangerie in Paris, which are my favorite walks on Sunday mornings. I also believe that my job as a film programmer and the fact that I see several films a day for my work has a significant impact on the notion of the framework which is of capital importance in the way I define the forms on my canvases.

Tell us about your studio?

My studio is my goal! I do not yet have a workshop dedicated to my painting and I installed a very small space in my apartment for my artistic practice. So there are canvases everywhere, paint and brushes in the middle of the books and the rest of my decoration. In 2023, I hope to move to a bigger place.

Who's on your dream dinner party guest list, and what do you serve?

I prefer small committee dinners with family and friends rather than large dinners with many people. Otherwise, one of my great passions is food and eating! Italian and sea-related food is by far my favorite…

What's a film you watched and book you've read recently that had an impact on you?

As I said earlier, my job in the film industry leads me to watch several films a day, every day. I’m also a great reader since I was young. And I believe that each book, each movie, each artwork causes a tiny, almost invisible, change in us…

If you weren't an artist, what would you have been?

I already have two jobs, but if I didn’t do either, I would have been either a dancer or a jewellery designer. Dancer because I practiced dance for many years and never felt the same emotion as being on stage in any other practice. And jewellery designer because I have had a great passion for jewelry since forever.

What is your star sign and do you believe you embody it?

I was born in August and am a Leo. And apart from the blonde mane, I check all the boxes of the character of my sign!
