Ceramicist

Constanza Cecchetto

A native of Córdoba (Argentina), Constanza found her calling on the sunny island of Mallorca, where she has lived since 2002. While studying fashion design, fate introduced her to renowned fashion designer Miguel Adrover, which led to an internship for his 2012 New York Fashion Week show, “Out of My Mind”. It was here, where Constanza met Eric Damon, the stylist behind the hit series Gossip Girl, who worked with them on the collection, and made Constanza fall in love with the art of styling.

Since starting in her styling career in 2015, she has continued to explore new creative outlets, six years ago, she discovered ceramics, finding in it a meditative and expressive way to share another form of beauty.  Her creations, like her fashion work, convey a timeless, classic, modern and organic essence that endures. As a very curious person, in addition to working as a stylist, she has ventured into various fields, from healthy cooking – another of her great loves – to photography and the production of photo shoots.  All this has led her to be always attentive to learn and grow, combining her different passions.

In the world of tableware, Constanza found a perfect combination of her diverse interests. Her handmade pieces are made with the intention that whoever uses them is enjoying a wonderful moment, they bring functionality and embellish celebrating the ritual of food, art and shared experiences. In many of her pieces you can see a clear inspiration in textiles, manipulating clay as if it were the finest cotton or the most luxurious silk.

What is your discipline and when did you first encounter it?

I am a ceramist. A few years ago I was curious about this discipline, about how to transmit in a different way my aesthetic world, like how I was doing in fashion. I took courses and discovered that the contact with clay made me feel connected with myself. From that moment on it became a form of expression. Also, creating tableware is special to me, because of what it means to feed ourselves and everything that happens around the table. I feel that when I create it I put the intention that whoever uses it, is enjoying a wonderful moment.

What was your journey to becoming an artist?

In Argentina I went to a school specially focused on art and personal expression. Eventually I discovered that I wanted to express through fashion, study the style of urban tribes, and how we express ourselves through image and behavior. I am a fashion stylist and photographer, and within the plastic arts I have tried different disciplines, ceramics being the one I have connected with the most. I have lived in Mallorca for 20 years, where there is a very special artistic movement, people, places and incredible customs, which are pure inspiration, on the island there is an energy with which I feel connected and makes me want to grow in this movement of connection between artists that is emerging more and more.

Who are the key artists whose work inspires your own?

Undoubtedly, the one who marked me the most was Miguel Adrover. I did internships with him in Palma and New York when I was studying fashion design and later worked as an assistant for him for many years, creating a very close bond. His way of expression is absolutely brilliant. I like to attend talks, exhibitions and art events, where I discover people who inspire me every day, as well as admire architects and interior designers who create wonderful spaces, where I am inspired to create pieces, chefs and pastry chefs who inspire me to create tableware for their creations.

Tell us about your studio?

Currently my studio is in my house, in San Agustí, I have created a space where I feel really comfortable, near the sea, with an incredible natural light, my little temple where I feel I create my best pieces.

Who's on your dream dinner party guest list, and what do you serve?

I would definitely invite Miguel Adrover, any time with him does not leave you indifferent. Rossy De Palma, who I know and I find one of the most interesting, funny, wonderful and art-loving people, supporting different movements. I was recently in an exhibition called Xtant, in its 3rd edition in Palma, and I would definitely invite its creators, Kavita Parmar and Marcella Echevarria, Xtant seems to me the most interesting thing I’ve seen lately and I think they would bring incredible talks. Another guest would be Igor Gavar, creator of Oldushka Models, an agency for models over 50, personally I am very attracted to older people, for all that they have lived, and can contribute. I would love to work with this agency as a stylist and photographer, to meet Igor, to have him at the dinner and contribute with his vision. Of course I would love to invite Dolli Taylor creator of trobat, I think her vision on fashion and art would be very interesting for that dinner. In addition to these people I would invite some personal friends, entrepreneurs, who are also the ones who inspire me every day having wonderful talks. For dinner, I imagine an informal sunset in the middle of a vineyard, a table with a light linen tablecloth, a line of candles and of course good wine, cheeses, some dishes to share with different sweet and sour combinations, fruit and some chocolate.

What's a film you watched and book you've read recently that had an impact on you?

In summer one of my favorite events is the Cinema a la fresca, in front of the cathedral in Palma. I love going with friends but I really enjoy going alone. Last summer, I went with little expectation about the movie, they showed Green Book. That night was one of the most special films: the photography, the music, the interpretations, the message it transmits. It’s a film that is a little predictable, not pretentious, but one of the most pleasant experiences that leaves a good feeling. Of course the environment where I saw it, always makes everything unique. There I have discovered many films that are on my list of favourites.

If you weren't an artist, what would you have been?

I would have loved to study nutrition, to help in medicine to make people feel better. To accompany in the process of finding oneself again in food, something so sacred about how we feed to take care of even the tiniest thing, our cells.

What is your star sign and do you believe you embody it?

My star sign is Taurus. I’m not a fan of researching the zodiac, but I have to admit that everything I read about Taurus represents me quite a bit. I’m very earthy, loyal, and very strong-minded, and I’ve read that Taurus needs to be surrounded by beautiful things, rich smells, art lovers, and that everything aesthetically has a meaning… good food, I don’t know if it represents all Taurus, but I read it in different occasions and I totally identify.
