Belgian artist Martine Thoelen, now based in Switzerland, expresses herself through painting, video art and ceramics. Her works draw on her deepest self, and reflect the duality of her inner world, one of both strength and acute sensitivity. The depth and daring of this artistic approach enables Martine Thoelen to permeate her works with an entire universe of emotions, and to give life to delicate yet powerful creations.
Martine Thoelen graduated from Provinciaal hoger instituut voor kunstonderwijs, Belgium in Fine Arts and completed studies in Toegepaste Grafiek from Stedelijke academie voor schone kunsten in Belgium. read martine’s interview with trobat and shop her exclusive collection of pieces on trobat.co below
I’m a painter from education but a ceramicist by heart.
While I was preparing for a solo show in 2016, I started to work with porcelain and found an instant love for the medium. I started working with porcelain passionately and never stopped since.
My first experience with art was my art teacher in middle school, an extremely fascinating woman with a big passion for art. I always looked forward to her classes and the moment she started talking about art I was deaf and blind for anything else.
My work is more inspired by poetry, emotions, philosophy and places…
My studios, a painting and porcelain studio are 2 separate pavilions. They are overloaded with light, Japanese inspired. Very quiet and surrounded with nature.
All my friends, my son, family and the people I have good times with and star guest Louise Bourgeois (RIP). My dinner would be somewhere with a view to the sea, good music, laughter and fun. Starting with a rowanberry negroni, margaritas…plenty of international dishes served with good wines and water 😉
The beauty of everyday things by Soetsu Yanagi, philosopher and japanese folk-craft pioneer.
